An updated version of the absolutely BEST boat systems maintenance book, bar none! All sections have been updated, but the electrical portion has been extensively revised. This alone makes the purchase of this new edition worth the cost. There is not another book that comes close to the depth covered in this book. (I have just finished a complete refit of my sailboat and I nearly wore out my copy of the previous version of the book because I referenced it so frequently.) I highly recommend this book for anyone who really wants to understand how to properly design, modify, maintain, or repair the various systems on their boat.

You know, Nigel Calder is famous for writing pertinent books. That's why he's famous. If you're doing your own work or want to be able to communicate well with whomever is doing the work for you, then this is a very worthwhile book to have. You won't know everything just because you read it, but you'll know a lot more than when you started. The only thing I don't like is the black and white photographs. it can be difficult to know what you're actually looking at because of the mumble jumble of grey shades and poor lighting. Line drawings would have been much more instructive.

This book is like the "mother-load" of information on Battery technology for your boat. It was almost more than I ever wanted to know, but still right up to date on the types of battery systems that are out there and what the differences are between them. I am an Electronics Technician by training, and have always prided myself on what I have learned by that (now decades old) training that has propelled me into all the branches of Electronics that I have been over half-a-century. I have seen only a couple of books on DC Electronics and Battery Technology Systems that offer this kind of information to the regular kind of person that might just own a boat and wants to understand the electrical system. So far, I've only read a few chapters into the book. But, Hey! there's still more!!! If it's all as good as the first few chapters, it's got to be great. The author did his homework. Even if you don't own a boat, you could still benefit by reading this book!

I am an engineer aboard commercial vessels. I've seen lots of training text and reference books. This is, by far, the most comprehensive and easy to read and understand book on boat engineering systems I've ever been exposed to.

This book is an invaluable tool in the marine industry. As an employee of a marine accessory manufacturer, I refer to the wisdom inside the pages - mostly for the electrical systems. Our product is a large load on the DC system of small craft and understanding the limitations of boat electrical systems is a major portion of my job. When questions arise, I go to the boater’s bible: The Boatowner’s Mexhanical and Electrical Manual. Nigel explains complex systems in a manner that is easy to understand, for beginners and professionals alike.

Clasic book. Nice updates from last edition make this one worth buying. Nigel has adopted new recomendations based on recent information...i.e. he doesn't hesitate to correct himself. This is a very good sign. Unfortunately if one were to do all the maintanence he describes, there would be no time and no money to go sailing.

This book is amazing. You can dig as deep as you need on any given subject. I was a little surprised by the lack of specificity on diesel repair in parts (most people refer to exhaust elbows as consumables; Calder hardly mentions them at all), but the 4 chapters on electrical systems are extremely thorough.

Great reference book with easily understood concepts, explantions and suggestions. I bought on copy for home and another to keep on my boat. Nigel Calder is a prolific writer and an incredible resource.
